On Tuesday 2 February 2010, a delegation from Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden attended the official opening of the major exhibition ‘Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde, Constructing a new world' in Tate Modern in London. This exhibition is a co-production of De Lakenhal and Tate Modern, and could be viewed at De Lakenhal in the period 18 October 2009 - 3 January 2010. After that, the exhibition travelled to London. The official invitees included many lenders, prominent artists, museum directors and public administrators. The Dutch cabinet was represented by State Secretary for European Affairs Frans Timmermans. The team of De Lakenhal included Meta Knol (Director) and Doris Wintges (Curator of Modern Art), who was responsible for the contents of the exhibition. Peter Berns, who as Interim Director of De Lakenhal in 2009 bore responsibility for the preparations for this grand collaborative project, was also among those attending. The private opening was concluded in the evening with a festive dinner on the seventh floor of Tate Modern, with an enchanting view of the city below. This exhibition marks the first time that the work of Van Doesburg and his contemporaries can be viewed in a major retrospective in Great Britain. The exhibition in Tate Modern runs until 16 May 2010.
